Solutions for Large Windows

When we are asked to design a window treatment for large openings, we know immediately that our choices will be limited. Some product can be made to fit large opening but are cumbersome and not user friendly.

It is always best to select a product that will give years of simple operation without concern for weight or extra wear and tear on the cords. Larger, heavier shades always have more wear on the cords. Wood blinds are a good example. They can be made up to 96” wide and 72” long but are heavy. If you do not lift often, but tilt to open more frequently, the weight would not be a concern.

Roller shades have some fabric selections that can be made to a wider width, however, they need a heavier roller and can be a bit clumsy to roll. The new Designer Banded Shades can be made up to 106” wide and are a bit more stable than a single roller shade so this is a nice option for those large windows.

My first choice would be Hunter Douglas Silhouette or Nantucket Shades for all round ease of daily opening, closing and lifting. They can be made up to 120” wide and now have a longer length option, up to 136” long. They offer great UV protection, view through or privacy options.

The often overlooked product that offers large sizes is the metal Venetian Blind. While these are higher maintenance, there are lots of color choices and vane widths of 1” or 2”. There are some great new finishes available and I have used them in contemporary settings to bring together the silvers, grays and blacks so popular with the retro look.
